How to Build a Website with Claude: From Brief to Working Code

Use Claude for long-form planning, polished copy, and — with Claude Code — building and deploying real website code. A step-by-step workflow.

Claude is useful at two levels of a website project: as a writing and planning partner in the Claude apps, and as a coding agent with Claude Code. Here's how to use both.

Planning with Claude

Claude handles long inputs well, so give it everything: your notes, competitor pages you admire (as text), customer emails, and your offer. Ask it to produce a sitemap, messaging hierarchy and a content plan. Then push back — ask what's missing, what's unclear and which questions a skeptical customer would ask.

Writing copy

Share a style sample and ask for sections, not whole pages. Ask Claude to flag any claim that needs a source. Keep a "facts sheet" (prices, locations, guarantees) in the conversation so drafts stay accurate.

Building with Claude Code

Claude Code works in your terminal and editor. A typical flow for a simple site:

  1. Create a project folder and describe the site you want in plain language.
  2. Let it scaffold a framework project (for example Next.js with Tailwind).
  3. Review each change, run the site locally, and iterate page by page.
  4. Ask it to add metadata, a sitemap, structured data and accessibility fixes.
  5. Push to GitHub and deploy to your host.

Extending Claude with MCP

With the Model Context Protocol, Claude can connect to tools like GitHub, databases, browsers or your CMS. Start with read-only access and add write permissions only where you'll review the results.

Compare it with other assistants in ChatGPT vs Claude for website building.
