How to Optimize Your Website for SEO: A Beginner's Action Plan
A prioritised SEO plan for new websites: indexing, keyword mapping, on-page basics, internal links, content quality and earning links — in the order that matters.
SEO is the practice of making your pages easy for search engines to find, understand and trust — and genuinely useful for the people searching. Here's the order we'd work in.
1. Make sure you can be indexed
Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit your XML sitemap, and check that important pages aren't blocked by robots.txt or noindex. Our technical SEO checklist covers the details.
2. Map one topic to one page
Research what your audience searches for, group similar queries, and assign each group to a single page. Avoid multiple pages competing for the same intent.
3. Nail on-page basics
- Title tag: specific, compelling, roughly 50–60 characters
- Meta description: a clear summary that earns the click
- H1: one per page, matching the topic
- Headings: logical H2/H3 structure that answers sub-questions
- Images: descriptive file names and alt text

4. Build internal links
Link from broad guides to specific pages and back. Use descriptive anchor text. Pillar pages and topic clusters (like our complete website guide) help both users and crawlers understand your expertise.
5. Write content that deserves to rank
Answer the question fully, add first-hand experience, show who wrote it, cite sources and keep it updated. Google's guidance emphasises helpful, reliable, people-first content.
6. Earn links and mentions
Create resources worth referencing — original data, tools, templates — and tell people about them. Avoid buying links; it violates Google's spam policies.
7. Prepare for AI search
The same clarity that helps classic SEO helps AI systems summarise and cite you. Read our AI search optimization guide.
