How to Optimize a Website for AI Search: GEO, AEO and LLM Visibility

What AI Overviews, answer engines and LLM assistants mean for your website — what's known, what isn't, and practical steps to make content easy to retrieve and cite.

By Weblumba Editorial TeamPublished Updated 2 min read

Search is no longer only a list of links. Google shows AI Overviews and AI Mode, and people ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity directly. These systems retrieve web pages, summarise them and often cite sources.

What Google has said

Google's guidance is that the fundamentals of SEO apply to its AI features: pages must be crawlable and indexable, and content should be helpful and reliable. There's no special markup required to appear in AI Overviews. Traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's performance reporting.

Best practices for AI retrieval (not proven factors)

Answer first, then elaborate

Put a direct, one-to-three sentence answer near the top of the section that addresses a question, then add depth. This helps readers and makes passages easy to quote.

Use descriptive headings

Headings phrased like real questions ("How much does X cost?") create clean, self-contained passages.

Be specific and sourced

Concrete numbers, dates, definitions and named sources are more useful than vague claims. Link to primary sources.

Show expertise and freshness

Author bios, reviewed dates and update notes help users and systems judge trust. Keep key pages current.

Structure your entity

Describe your organisation consistently across your site and profiles. Use Organization, Article and FAQ structured data where it truthfully applies.

Earn mentions

Coverage and citations on reputable sites help establish who you are. Brand mentions matter in both classic and AI discovery.

How to measure LLM visibility

  • Segment AI-assistant referrals in analytics (e.g. traffic from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai).
  • Watch Search Console for changes in impressions vs clicks.
  • Keep a monthly log of target questions tested in major assistants: were you cited, and how?

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is an industry term for improving visibility in AI-generated answers. It builds on SEO fundamentals — crawlability, quality content, authority — with extra emphasis on clear, quotable, well-structured information.

Can I guarantee my site gets cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No. No one outside these companies controls how their systems select sources. You can make content easier to find, understand and trust, which improves your chances.

Do I need a special file like llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed convention, not an adopted standard, and major search engines have not said they use it. It's low-cost to add but shouldn't replace fundamentals.
