Text Anonymizer: How to Remove Personal Data Before Pasting Into ChatGPT or Claude

Protect customer and personal data when using AI assistants: what counts as PII, how to anonymize text before pasting it, and a free browser-based Text Anonymizer that restores names afterwards.

AI assistants are great for summarising emails, analysing leads or drafting replies — but pasting raw customer data into any third-party tool is a privacy risk. Anonymize first, then paste.

What counts as personal data (PII)?

Names, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, ID numbers (passport, PAN, SSN, Aadhaar), bank and card numbers, IP addresses, and anything that identifies a person when combined.

A simple, safe workflow

  1. Paste your text into our free Text Anonymizer — it runs entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
  2. It replaces emails, phones, card-like numbers, IDs, URLs and names you list with placeholders like [EMAIL_1] and [NAME_1].
  3. Copy the anonymized text into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
  4. Paste the AI's answer back into the tool and click Restore to put the real values back — locally.

Also check your AI settings

  • Review whether your plan uses conversations for model training and adjust data controls.
  • Prefer business/enterprise plans with data-processing agreements for company data.
  • Never paste passwords, API keys or full card numbers into any AI tool.
