How to Build a WordPress Website: Step-by-Step for Beginners
Install WordPress, choose a fast theme, add essential plugins, create your pages, set up SEO and security, and launch — a beginner-friendly WordPress tutorial.
WordPress remains one of the most flexible ways to build a website you fully own. Here's the fastest path from zero to launch.
1. Get a domain and hosting
Choose a host that offers one-click WordPress installs, free SSL and automatic backups. Read how to choose web hosting and how to choose a domain.
2. Install WordPress
Use your host's installer. Choose a strong admin username (not "admin"), a unique password, and enable two-factor authentication as soon as you log in.
3. Configure the basics
- Settings → General: site title, tagline, timezone
- Settings → Permalinks: choose "Post name" for clean URLs
- Settings → Reading: set a static homepage if you're building a business site
- Delete sample posts, pages and unused themes/plugins
4. Choose a lightweight theme
Pick a well-maintained block theme with good reviews and recent updates. Lighter themes load faster and are easier to customise with the block editor.
5. Add only essential plugins
- An SEO plugin (titles, sitemaps, schema)
- A caching/performance plugin (if your host doesn't provide caching)
- A security plugin and a backup solution
- A forms plugin
- WooCommerce if you're selling products
Every plugin adds code to maintain. Fewer, better plugins is the rule.
6. Build your pages
Create Home, About, Services/Products, Contact and a Privacy Policy. Use AI assistants to draft copy, then edit in your own words — see how to build a website with AI.
7. SEO, speed and launch
Set titles and meta descriptions, submit your sitemap to Search Console, compress images, and run our free Website Audit. Then follow the launch checklist in our complete guide.
8. Maintain it
Update WordPress core, themes and plugins regularly, keep backups off-site, and review security logs monthly.
