How to Build a Website with ChatGPT: Prompts, Workflow and Limits

Use ChatGPT to plan your sitemap, write page copy, generate code snippets and review SEO — with copy-paste prompts and the limits you need to know.

ChatGPT won't publish a website for you, but it can do a lot of the thinking and typing. Here's a workflow that turns it into a useful website assistant.

1. Plan the site

Act as a website strategist. Business: [describe]. Audience: [describe].
Goal: [action]. Create a sitemap with page purposes, one CTA per page,
and the key questions each page must answer.

2. Write page copy in your voice

Paste two or three samples of your own writing and ask ChatGPT to match the tone. Then ask for copy one section at a time (hero, benefits, process, FAQ) so you can edit as you go. Our AI Prompt Generator builds structured prompts for you.

3. Generate code snippets

ChatGPT can write HTML/CSS sections, WordPress block patterns or small scripts. Paste the output into a staging site, test it, and ask follow-up questions when something breaks. For larger code projects, a dedicated coding tool is usually better — see Cursor vs Claude Code.

4. Review SEO

Ask it to critique a page for search intent, headings and missing questions. Use the SEO Content Brief Generator to structure new articles.

5. Know the limits

  • It can produce confident, wrong facts — verify.
  • It doesn't know your business unless you tell it.
  • Don't paste customer data or secrets into any AI tool without checking your plan's data policies.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT host my website?

No. ChatGPT can help you plan, write and code a site, but you still need a platform or host to publish it — for example WordPress on a web host, a website builder, or a Node.js host for code.
