Cursor vs Claude Code: Editor-First vs Agent-First AI Coding

Cursor puts AI inside a VS Code-style editor; Claude Code is an agent that works across your repo from the terminal and IDE. Compare workflows, strengths and fit.

Both are excellent AI coding tools with different centres of gravity. See the criteria table in Cursor vs Claude Code.

Cursor: AI inside your editor

Cursor is a code editor built on VS Code with AI woven in — autocomplete, chat about your codebase, and an agent mode for larger changes. If you like seeing and steering every edit in a visual editor, it feels natural.

Claude Code: an agent across your project

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. You describe a task and it reads files, edits code, runs commands and tests, and works with Git — in the terminal, IDE extensions or on the web. It's well suited to multi-step tasks you'd delegate to a teammate, and it can be extended with MCP servers.

How people combine them

Many developers use both: an editor for hands-on work and quick edits, and an agent for bigger refactors, migrations or scaffolding new features.

Tips for either tool

  1. Keep a short project README or instructions file describing conventions.
  2. Ask for a plan before large changes.
  3. Review every diff; run tests.
  4. Never commit secrets — use environment variables.
