How to Build a Website
How to Build a Website with AI: A Practical Workflow That Actually Ships
Use AI to plan, design, write and even code your website — without ending up with a generic, error-filled site. A step-by-step workflow with tool choices.
AI can now do real work on a website project: turn a vague idea into a sitemap, generate a first design, draft copy, write code and check your SEO. The trick is using it for the right steps and keeping a human in charge of decisions and facts.
The three ways to build with AI
- AI website builders (e.g. Wix, Hostinger Website Builder, Framer) generate a hosted site from a short brief. Best for simple business sites and landing pages.
- AI app builders (e.g. Lovable, Replit, Bolt.new) generate full-stack apps with databases and logins. Best for tools and MVPs. See our vibe coding guide.
- AI assistants + a platform you control (ChatGPT or Claude alongside WordPress or a framework). Best for content-heavy sites and long-term ownership.

Step 1: Use AI to plan, not just to write
Give an assistant real context and ask for structure first:
I run a [business] in [city] serving [audience]. Goal: [calls/bookings/sales].
Propose a sitemap (max 8 pages), the primary call to action per page,
and the 5 questions customers ask most before buying.
Edit the result. You know your customers; the AI doesn't.
Step 2: Generate the first version
In an AI builder, paste your refined brief. In WordPress, pick a lightweight theme and ask the assistant to draft page sections. In an app builder, describe screens and data one feature at a time.
Step 3: Replace generic with specific
AI drafts are fluent but generic. Add what only you have: real photos, prices, process, service areas, results, credentials and customer language. This is what makes content useful — for people and for search engines.
Step 4: Check SEO and accessibility
Ask the assistant to review each page for a clear H1, a descriptive title under ~60 characters and a meta description under ~155 characters — or use our free SEO Title Generator and Meta Description Generator. Then run the Website Audit after launch.
Step 5: Automate the boring parts
Once live, connect forms to your email or CRM and set up simple reports. Our AI automation guide shows safe starter workflows.
When not to rely on AI
Legal pages, medical or financial claims, pricing and anything regulated need expert human review. AI can draft; it can't take responsibility.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI build a complete website for me?
AI website builders can generate a complete starter site from a description. You still need to review the design, replace generic text with real details, connect your domain and check SEO settings.
Is an AI-built website bad for SEO?
Not inherently. Search engines evaluate the quality and usefulness of content, not the tool that produced it. Thin, generic or inaccurate content performs poorly regardless of how it was made.
