What is changing
Google now shows AI-generated summaries (AI Overviews and AI Mode) for many queries, and people increasingly ask assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity directly. These systems retrieve web content and summarise it, often with citations. Visibility now includes being cited in an answer, not only ranking in a list.
What we know — and what we don't
Google states that the same fundamentals apply to AI features in Search: crawlable, indexable, helpful, people-first content. Nobody outside these companies has a verified list of 'AI ranking factors'. Treat any tool promising guaranteed AI citations with skepticism. We label the practices below as reasonable best practices, not proven ranking factors.
AEO & GEO in practice
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are industry labels for making content easy to retrieve, understand and quote: answer the question directly near the top, use descriptive headings, define terms, include specific facts with sources, keep pages up to date, and show who wrote it and why they're qualified.
Entities, brand mentions and structured data
Be consistent about who you are across your site, profiles and directories. Use Organization, Article, FAQ and Product structured data where it truthfully applies. Earn mentions from reputable sites. These help machines understand your brand; they don't guarantee inclusion.
Measuring LLM visibility
Track referrals from AI assistants in analytics, monitor Search Console (AI features traffic is included in overall performance), and periodically test key questions in major assistants, recording whether and how you're cited. Expect noisy, changing results.
