Halloween Sales 2026: How to Spot a Spooky-Good Software Deal (and Avoid the Tricks)
Halloween kicks off the software sale season. Here's how to tell a real hosting, VPN or website builder deal from a scary renewal trap, before you hand over your card.
Halloween falls on a Saturday, October 31 this year, and you'll start seeing "spooky" promo banners from hosts, VPNs and SaaS tools all week. Some are genuinely good. Some are just Black Friday prices with a pumpkin emoji.
Here's how to tell the treats from the tricks.
Trick #1: The renewal-price ghost 👻
That $2.99/month offer? It almost always needs a multi-year prepayment, and renews at a much higher price. That's not a scam, it's standard. But compare the total cost over the full term + one renewal, not the headline number.
Trick #2: The countdown timer that never ends
If the "ends in 02:14:59" timer resets every time you reload, it's urgency theatre. Real sales have real end dates.
Trick #3: The checkout add-on swarm
Backups, "premium" SSL, SEO packs, priority support: pre-ticked. Some are useful. Many duplicate things you already get free. Untick everything, then add back only what you understand.
Trick #4: "Lifetime deals" from mystery brands
A lifetime licence is only worth it if the company is still around in two years. Check how long they've existed and whether they've shipped real updates.
Should you buy on Halloween or wait for Black Friday?
Simple rule:
- Buy at Halloween if your hosting or VPN renews before late November, or the Halloween price beats what that brand offered last Black Friday.
- Wait for everything else. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30, historically the deepest discounts of the year for hosting and VPNs.
Trick #5: The "free" domain that isn't
Many hosting deals include a free domain for the first year. That's genuinely useful, but the domain then renews at the registrar's normal price, and some popular extensions renew higher than you'd expect. Before checkout, look up the renewal price for the exact domain extension you want.
Trick #6: Coupon sites that aren't coupon sites
Pop-up "coupon" pages often just send you through an affiliate link with no extra discount, and some push you towards the wrong plan. If a code is real, it will usually also appear on the brand's own promo page. When in doubt, go direct.
How to compare two Halloween hosting deals in 3 minutes
Grab a notepad and write down, for each offer:
- The term you must prepay (12, 24, 36 or 48 months).
- The total you pay today (not the monthly figure).
- The renewal price per month after that term.
- What's included: domain, email, backups, SSL.
- The refund window.
Now work out the total cost over three years for each one. The cheaper three-year total wins, not the bigger headline discount. Our prepay or not guide has a worked example if you want to see the maths.
VPN and software deals: what to watch
VPNs often run Halloween previews of their Black Friday offers. Check:
- How many devices the plan covers.
- Whether extras are bundled in (password manager, storage) and if you'd use them.
- The money-back window, so you can test it on your own connection.
For design and productivity software, annual plans usually beat monthly ones if you use the tool every week. If you only use it occasionally, a monthly plan you can cancel is often cheaper overall.
Our Halloween shortlist strategy
Don't try to catch every deal. Pick the two or three categories you actually need this year (for most site owners that's hosting, a VPN and one design tool), bookmark the official deal pages, and compare them calmly. Everything else waits for Black Friday.
Real treats: deals that are usually worth it
Not everything is a trick. These categories tend to offer real value during October promos:
- Hosting for a site you're launching now. If you need hosting this month, a good Halloween first-term price beats waiting.
- VPN plans if your current one is about to renew. Switching on a promo can cost less than renewing at full price.
- Annual plans for tools you already use every week. Moving from monthly to annual during a sale is one of the safest savings.
- Domain registrations for names you're sure about, as long as you've checked the renewal price.
A quick word on refunds
Before you pay, find the refund policy and read it properly. Note how many days you have, whether domain fees are refundable (they often aren't), and whether prepaid months are refunded pro-rata after the guarantee period. Thirty seconds of reading can save you from being locked into a plan that doesn't work for you.
What we'll be watching this year
We'll keep an eye on the official promo pages of the hosts, VPNs and design tools we review, and add notes to those reviews when a Halloween offer looks better than the brand's usual pricing. If a deal needs a long prepay or has a steep renewal, we'll say so plainly.
One more trick: the "regular price" that never existed
Some sale pages show a crossed-out "regular" price that's much higher than anyone normally pays. Compare against the price you'd actually pay on a normal week, not the inflated number next to the discount badge.
Halloween deal checklist
- Is this something I'd buy anyway?
- Have I worked out the total cost over 2–3 years?
- Do I know the renewal price?
- Have I unticked add-ons I don't need?
- Is the refund window clear?
Where to look (safely)
Go straight to the brand's official site, not coupon pop-ups. Our reviews link to official pricing pages so you always see the real, current offer:
- Hosting: Hostinger review · best web hosting
- VPN: NordVPN review · best VPN services
- Design: best graphic design software
Don't get spooked into overpaying. Join our newsletter and we'll send the Black Friday deals we've actually checked. No fake timers, promise.
Frequently asked questions
Are Halloween hosting deals better than Black Friday?
Usually not. Hosting and VPN brands traditionally save their deepest discounts for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but a Halloween deal can be worth it if your renewal is due earlier.
